Differences between the 298ss vs 298ssx?

Hello. I'm in the market foor a 298ss but then noticed the 298ssx. She'd be used in the Chesapeake Bay for watersports and lounging and cruising.

 

Can someone highlight differences between the 298ss vs the 298ssx models? What does the x represent? I tried searching but didn't find a direct comparison between them.

 

I don't want to drop more than ~$50k for one. I wouldn't like do any older than 2003, although low engine hours does account for something. I don't want smaller because I don't believe anything smaller would be outfitted w/dual screws.

 

So, differences between the 298ss and 298ssx and model years 2003 to newer are considered. Any model year I should absolutely stay away from, etc? Any common historical failure points to inspect/examine during purchase? (Yes, I'd pay to have it surveyed) Preferences between the Volvo-Penta vs Mercruiser? (I know that might start a war, lol), but this will be my first boat! (I've had experience with boating for the last 10 years).
