You should come to The Grand Traverse Bay area, there are two bays East and West. I guess this only depends on how far north you travel since gas is a little pricey. Traverse City has great festivals, concerts and people to boat with. If you decide to make the trip you won't be disappointed.

My wife and I life in SW Chicago Suburbs. We trailer our 248 LS BR and put in at East Chicago. We love to cruise the Chicago River ND along the shoreline. We often visit the beaches of Miller. I have heard that Saugatuck is really nice and not too long of a trip. Does anyone know of places to go, places to stay overnight, marinas with transient slips?

New to being a boat owner, but we will be slipped in a Marina located on the Calumet River so that we may frequently visit Lake Michigan and cruise along the Chicago skyline. Hope to meet some of you all!

There is an Inland Waterway in northern Michigan that runs from Crooked Lake near Harbor Springs, through the Crooked River to Burt Lake. Indian River is at the south end of Burt Lake. I live about a half mile down the Indian River and you can tie up in front of my house if you want. Another 5 miles down the Indian River and you hit Mullett Lake. Burt and Mullett are two of the five biggest lakes in Michigan. At the north end of Mullett Lake is the Cheboygan River that leads out to Lake Huron. Mackinaw Island is about 15 miles, Les Cheneux(sp?) Islands are on the south side of the Upper Pennisula and the North Channel is about 30 miles across Lake Huron and runs through a beautiful part of Canada. There's a trailer service that hauls boats from Harbor Springs to Crooked Lake, or Crooked Lake to Harbor Springs. There are multiple places to stay. Most people do the Inland Waterway on one day, but you can take a week if you want. Remember everything that's waiting after you get to Lake Huron. Call me with any questions 231-838-7420

IndianRiver great post! We frequent this area all the time based from the mouth of the river at Burt. If anyone is trailering there are multiple launches in the southeast corner of Burt lake and on the Indian River. If Burt lake is rough you can take a 45 minute river ride to Mullet Lake to find smooth water for pulling the kids on the tube or skis or relax on the sand bar.

From Chicago it is great to see the fireworks off Navy Pier. The downtown tour is often nice - the lock isn't too bad. After that, head south to the beaches of Miller, Wells beach, Dunes, & Beverly Shores. The water gets crystal clear. Less industrial. Check the marine report before heading out. 1-3 foot waves is my limit...perfer ZERO though.

Thanks cogs! Had a blast this past season. Looking forward to do a little more boating away from the city this umber...I.e. hitting the dunes, Milwaukee, maybe Michigan. I'm ready summer!

I live in Charlevoix... so I have immediate access to Lake Michigan or Charlevoix. I've been a boater my entire life, and if there is a heaven for boaters, this is it! Never a shortage of places to go, or things to see.
