  1. Hi there

If it was me, i make a good revision on the engine, all oils out, filters out, change cables like mercury normally do after X hours, check the impeler, also change the valvoline on the unit.

Then start the engine outside water, don´t forget to check or change, How you say this in english.... there is 1 or 2 bracelets maybe is this word, that goes from your engine wheel to water pump and also charge your batteries, normally they need change from time to time, like your engine on the car, also ask the mercury guy to check the ( coletores), this is 2 things that make exaust to the water, dont know the exact word in english.

There are also 1 things that can think your boat, like a long death, you just see it on next day, is where our unit connects to the engine, in salt water some animals gets in there and just crack it when you pull up or down the unit and starts to get water in it when i change all cables this is also change by mercruiser dealer, like is recomemded by mercury.

I change all this from 2 to 2 years, and the engine exaust from 5 to 5 because i have a seacore engine.

Insert fresh water where you pumps are, just to see if the automatics are working. Even on fresh water, change the zyncs.

Switch on all your eletricity on the boat, check all lights, fuses etc...,

This is if was I, i wouldn´t check i would change them anyway, for me the worst thing is to go with fammily on some trip and the engine fails so maybe i´m just too paranoid with engine reviews, but after 7 years with a 278 ssc never have any problem with the engine, and myne is all year on the salt water.

Yesterday i was with the mercruiser dealer to see the work on the engine, and like he says the engine appears brand new.

    Best Regards

    Hope I helped

  2. Hi Randy

I worked in Volvo a long time ago, i can tell you that normally no one change the props why?

Simple answer, Are going to compete? do you have a race boat? do you have race engines? NO

So what you are doing is to have a top speed with some good rpm´s, but .... when you turn the boat will not do the same curves, will not have the good drag etc..., do you know what happens when you loose drag? on a pwc you make a spin, on a boat you can harme yourself and everyone on the boat.

That is why every boat is tested by the manufacture to have the best sets for the best engines that the boat can have.

Why your boat dont have 3 engines out boards with 250 hp each??? you can do that also, i encourage you to think a litle about what you are doing, and think why the manufacture didn´t use the F3/F3 or F3/F5, if your boat was tested by monterey with that set and they can garantee that is ok, you should do that if you don´t have monterey graphics with that set, that means your boat with that engine was never tested by them.

Remember that your boat have a design under water, when you take the engine to a top speed that is not tested on a tide turn on top speed it can colapse. (top speed, if you only have top rpm the engine will go away on a 2 or 3 years top )

But hey, this is just me, i never changed a single set in any boat i have, except on a pwc, there is where i play with diferent set of propellers, change the admission, change the plates etc... and try to have the best top speed, but not the best to turn, on a turn i need to take gas off or the pwc will not make the curve.

    Rip5 is corect.

Hope you will not regret this

    Best Regards

( Sory for my english im portuguese )

  3. hi there

I have a 278sc i did change all wired system when i bought the boat brand new.

I need a 220v inside the cabin for laptop or mobile when docked, what we did was, create a 2 batteries system ( that come with the boat) for different way of work.

So batterie 1 is always reserved for engine, when 1+2 can also start the engine, but on batterie switch on 2, only give eletricity for things like, refrigerator, radio, etc...

When docked all boat is connect to land, even on the switch turned off. Baterries are charging and all things works on the boat except the engine.

It was not easy, i need to see how monterey connects things, change the fuse box, change the wire put new wires for this kind off connection.

But in the end the 2 batteries life is about 2 to 3 years mininum i have the boat past 7 years and change only twice the batteries last 2 was this summer.

You need to create 2 diferent ways off getting eletricity on the boat, but remember that on switch 1+2 they should start the engine, or you can get without power for the engine.

Also ask for the convert manufacturer some help, i remember we did that, for connecting some wires directly to the convert and not to the batteries, the 220v dosen´t work on open sea only when docked.

Internal lights where disconnect and also connect directly to the convert, i dont need night lights on the cabin on the sea i need them when docked on the marina.

The best way for you to do this is start looking for the fuse panel, what is connect there and start to have a diagram off your boat, sometimes the same fuse have 1 or 2 or 3 things connect to it, my fuse pannel was changed for a 20 fuse on it, from factory we have about 7 or 8 fuses,

This shoud be done by someone expert on a 12v system, like in cars, eletricity guys working in houses is not the guy you need, you need a car eletricity expert, or a boat eletricity expert.

I dont have the photos off that work, sorry about that, And im portuguese so my english maybe is not the best sorry for that too.

Need more help explain what you are doing and if i know i help

  4. Hi there

I think about that, a bow truster is a must have on the size off this boat with 1 engine, even on a 278sc try to dock with low wind is not easy, if you dock on reverse, is a litle problem handling the front not to crash on the boat on your side on a marina.

If we think about that a litle, i supose that all boats from 8 meters should have a bow truster even if is a extra, i´ll try to speak to the dealer here if i go with the deal and ask him to ask Monterey if is possible to buy the boat with a bow truster even if it cost more money, but it will be a very good investment.

About your question did you use Quicksilver zyncs?

  5. Hi there

I´m thinking buying that boat this year, how it runs? what engine do you have? 380 Merc DTS Seacore?

For merc Zyncs 4 months depends on what water is on in Portugal on the South zyncs change every 6 to 7 months on the North changes are 3 to 5 months

  6. Hi there

Normally no, but you can check that very easy just put it in off and check if any energy is getting to the batery.

In mine i did the installation so, in my case i use the batterie 2 for marina use and the other is in off but it charges anyway, even if i switch all to off it carges both, the baterie on 2 is just to have eletrical energie from the marina in the boat and dont use the batteries

    Hope it helps

  7. Hi all

I own a 278ssc and starting to think to change to a 295 SY

My question is on your website the description specs says 290 so this is for the last 285 or 280, and is this 295SY a 2016 model?

The virtual tour also is for the 280 i can see 280 on the left, is it possible to have the full specs for the 295SY?

Is your website still get updated or is 295 stoped prodution and you go for the 280?

    Best Regards

  8. Hi there,

Just to tell you something, i bought a seacore engine for other boat i have, and know i bought a monterey without seacore.

I have installed seacore in the Monterey boat.

YES, you can install that on an engine that is not seacore, you will spend about 5000€ per engine (have to replace the ECM, for europe is not included in the seacore kit and is expensive ask that in Brunwisck for your country)

And when they say seacore uses freshwater is really true.

BUT, the cooler system is from sea, so what is protects?????? it protects the inside engine, but the coolers uses sea water but more more cheaper to replace.

It 's like your car, it uses a radiator like the mercruiser engine those only the question is, your car uses the air and the vent to cool the water in the radiator, and in your boat? what will cool the freswater? THE SEA WATER.

As for the new boat, 670 hours on a 350 mag mpi engine i think it's a litle above what i could think, we are talking about 140 hours per year.

Contact your mercruiser dealer to go with you and check the engines ask him if you can take off the start engine on the engines to see if the engine wheel have any rust on them.

Check the wires to look for rust on them.

The last thing you would wont is a problem in any engine, for let you know when i buy the 4.3 mpi seacore engine for my 6,46 meters boat (not the monterey) that engine cost something like 18 000€ for me it was normal because we are talking about a boat from 1995.It was normal.

That's my advice be 100% sure that the engines are in good condition the other things you can put new ones if any goes off.

I go for your wife, she's got 100% reason, buying boats off the normal dealer can be something good or very very bad deal.

Heard people with lost off problems because off that, you will pay him, he will sell and if something goes wrong? what warranty do you have from him that he will replace it? In Portugal when you buy something in 2ª hand you have 6 months to give them back to the dealer if it is not in good shape, and have a 1 year warranty that is an obrigation from our law.

Please be carefull with that deal, try to see if a Monterey dealer won't pay that boat for you and you buy it to the dealer. At least is a Monterey dealer.

    Best Regards

  9. Louis,

When the engine goes into "safe mode" it will record the error code on the EMS computer chip (Engine Management System).

An authorised dealer will read this code and be able to tell you very quickly what the fault is

    Ian

    Hi there,

If it's a mercruiser you just activate THE GARDIAN, if it is a beep....beep.... exactly at 3000 rpm, normally rpm sensor, if it is continually propably is the petrol sensor. I'm saying this because i assumed that the gauges said that temp normal, psi normal, bat normal.

If you have a northstart system or navman system conected to the engine, you can see this code in display - smartcraft - historical errors, there it should appear at what engine hours that happen, why it happen and the mercruiser code for the error.

Otherwise just go to your dealer.

P.S. The gardian is a safe mode so you can get to the marina without blow out the engine.

If it is a seacore see the water level in the tank.

  10. I there,

All engine's from mercruiser or volvo, they use sensors, that sensors send information to the engine eletronics and then send it to the gauge.

So almost all time the problem isn't the gauge but the sensors. You have temp sensors, rpm sensors, petrol sensors, etc...

Sensors for exemple in mercruiser are something like plastic with a wired jack connection, normally you can see them in your engine, just follow the wires.

To best know this issue as MOST already said you should go to the volvo dealer.

    It's not a DIY job

In my mercruiser this weekend the rpm sensors goes off, so my engine don't run above 3000rpm and activate the GARDIEN, its a mercruiser defensive caution not to harm the engine.

I know it 's that sensor because i have my GPS connected to the engine and i recive all info in GPS with the codes off the problem if is any.

  11. Recently launched my new 2008 290CR in Melbourne Australia and now am looking at fitting a multifunction display. Anyone know if the Raymarine E80 will flushmount into the helm?

    Thanks

    Hi there,

If you run Mercruiser engines, please try to see the Northstar system, they can put your engine system (smartcraft) on the GPS, and even you can have the fishfinder included, and can connect the radio on the GPS, have a look, i put the the northstar system on my 278sc i can have access to the engine info about gas consumed and consumed curves, engine problems, digital monitoring about speed etc..., and how much miles i do with the gas tank.

    http://www.northstarnav.com/

About Raymarine i know a guy that uses that system, i'm not so sure if it's a 290cr i will be with him this weekend, if no one reply's i'll ask him.

  12. I have a '04 248LS with a 350 MAG.

I am going to change the in line fuel filter (not the fuel/water separator) and was wondering if someone on the forum has done this before.

This is the metal filter in the fuel line mounted on the starboard side of the engine compartment.

    1) I realize the hose is under pressure - so I'll have goggles and a bucket handy - how much gas (approx) will come out of the line?

    2) Should I be prepared to plug the line coming from the tank?

    3) I can only find Mercruiser or Sierra parts to replace this - cost is around $45 which seems high for a filter. Anyone know of a cheaper autopart replacement?

    4) Any other advice would be appreciated!

    Hi there,

If is what i think you are trying to replace, i wonder why don't get local help from Mercruiser Dealer? or Monterey Dealer?

  13. Need help!

I want to make some gelcoat repairs on my boat. Black and white. Can you tell the colour codes and the manufacture. And is it possible to buy it in Ukraine? Or near Ukraine?

    Waiting for answer!

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

Where did you buy your boat? maybe there is a Ukraine dealer try to check it out on the website www.montereyboats.com on the dealer locator bottom.

  14. QUOTE(marfi @ Jul 27 2009, 07:42 AM) Hi ron,

As you know i have a 278sc, with a 350Mag BravoIII unit, i´m going to my boat about the 8 off Agost for vacancies so, i cann´t give you the right answer, only after but i will see it, just a question did you see if there is any algae near the tube that comes from the sterndrive? is the tube in good condition? is it really tide up? if i´m right the speedmeter uses the sea water to give the correct mph so if the wires are in the right place it could be the tube from the sterndrive that have algae inside and don´t let the water flow as it should

    Ride with your heart

    Marfi

    Hi Marfi!

Thanks... I appreciate your help... I blew the the tube out from the speedo back to the transom with an air compressor. Everything seamed fine. Boat only has 50 hrs on it. I have the Volvo Penta 496 (8.1 GXi - 420hp) LOVE THE BOAT!!

    Hi Ron,

Just return from vacancies, as i told you i take a look about your problem, funny is i had a problem when rechead the 50 hours, my rpm starts to get completly insane, in 10 knots give me 3000 rpm my GPS gives me 1500 ( yes i have the engine connect to my GPS, so i have all electronic info on my screen), i changed the oil, filtres, etc.... that is recomended by Mercruiser in the 50 hours and the rpm starts working just fine again, no one i know in the Mercruiser here is Touron, hear anything about this, since your engine is a chevreolet as the same as mine, i wonder what the hell is this?

When diving i look to all tubes in my sterndrive it all seems really good, so as i told you, maybe you have algae in your tubes, have you try too change that tube? are you still have this problem? i work a few years ago in Volvo if you won´t i can give them a call to see what came up.

    Best Regards

  15. Thank-you very much for the reply TheMOST. I actually meant to post a reply here - as yesterday I managed to find the serial number. Because I still had the drive and transom serial numbers, the local Merc dealer was able to locate the serial number in a database.

I had contacted the previous owner because I assumed that his insurance company would have needed the engine serial number as well. But he said he couldn't find it anywhere.

Anyway, the problem seems to be resolved now. Thanks again!

    Hi there,

And hi Most, i don´t know how mercruiser works in US, but i think you have very litle problems, first your engine should be registered in the mercruiser and also all engine oil changes , etc... registered in the Mercruiser, second where is the warrant papers? where is the owner manual? all of that papers have the serial number, when you buy a second hand boat you should ask the owner for that papers, and go to a local mercruiser dealer to resgister in the Mercruiser company all info about the engine, if that problem happens here in Portugal no one would give you money.

  16. our '99 262cr does the exact same thing. it floats up, and your ear knows that everything is fine and normal but your eyes think you are cruising at Wide Open Throttle!

My RPM did the same thing and it is funny, i saw that the oil level on hot it was too low. I put engine oil and guess what, it stopped doing that. I have a nortstar system connect to the engine so i have all info off smartcraft on the GPS and the RPM show 1200 RPM and the tachometer show 2200 RPM it had a 1000 RPM diferençe.

I can´t figure out why is the oil level conect to the RPM. First i thought that was a problem with the tacometer but the truth is i put oil in and it stopped doing that. I only had 45 h on the engine a 350 MAG Bravo III in a 278sc.

  17. Hello all, I just picked up a 1995 225scr bowrider and I was wondering where I could get an owners manual or some other literature about this boat..thanks

    Hi there,

Nice boat to begin on your Monterey owner carrier, so 225scr 1995, i didnt´t see it on the section for download here in this forum, so you have to ask one copy to Most here or just send an email to Monterey or give them a call

  18. I have a 2008 Monterey 214 FS that I'll be trailering about 300 miles next month. Most of the trip will be on 2-lane highways so I'll probably be going about 60 mph max. Anyway, I have the snap-on covers covers that came with the boat when I bought it new last year. I've never trailered this far before, and would like to keep the boat covered when I tow in case of rain and to keep out road grime. Is this a wise idea? Will I be beating up my gel coat by keeping the covers on?

    Advice appreciated…thanks!

    Hi there,

Don´t use your bimini on, take it off or you can loose it on the highway, there´s no problem if you trail your boat with the cover on, the problem is only the bimini, i see to many boats gets to Algarve with no bimini because it blow out on the highway, the manufacter only give warranty until 30 mph on sea so make your choice about this, another thing pull up the sterndrive to the max and put a litle piece off wood on the back off the sterndrive so iff the trim oil have any problem you don´t end up on your sterndrive on the road, see one like this about 15 days ago, the boat owner wasn´t to please with it but so what it was him who let the sterndrive down.

It´s very expensive a replace like that.

    Ride with your heart

  19. Hi Jerome,

Thanks for your repply can you give us some pictures how you mounted that and how good really is the hull?

24-27º Celsius, only in my dreams best i have in Portugal in Algarve was 22-23º celsius and saint-tropez must be wonderful vacancies.
