  1. I am happy to report my problem has been solved. At the end of last season I changed the oil as part of the winterization proceedure. I aspirated all the oil I could get from the sump and then added the quantity recommended in the owner's manual for an oil and oil filter change.

Unfortunately for me, I did not carefully check the level in the sump. As part of the list of items to check when one has top end problems I checked the sump level and found in too high. I kept removing oil until the dip stick showed the level at the full mark. Turns out I had to removed over a quart of oil. Apparantly the too high level interfered with the free turning of the crankshaft and my engine's full power. With the level on the mark and the bottom cleaned I was again at 43.4 GPS MPH at 4300 RPM's. I'm a happy camper now!

  2. Hi.. I own a 2002 - 268ss The speedo is reading low. I blew out the line to the pick-up, no change. I am wondering if I have the correct pick-up unit as it looks to have been replaced. I have the white plastic triangular arm type, and not the paddle wheel style. Is this the correct pick-up? The speedo reads 30mph and the GPS shows 52mph. If this is the correct pick-up could there be another issue?

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi ron,

As you know i have a 278sc, with a 350Mag BravoIII unit, i´m going to my boat about the 8 off Agost for vacancies so, i cann´t give you the right answer, only after but i will see it, just a question did you see if there is any algae near the tube that comes from the sterndrive? is the tube in good condition? is it really tide up? if i´m right the speedmeter uses the sea water to give the correct mph so if the wires are in the right place it could be the tube from the sterndrive that have algae inside and don´t let the water flow as it should

  3. Hi there,

I have a few questions and i think this is where we should talk about so everyone on monterey can read about it these are the questions:

When you make a test drive was the tank full?

When you did not get on plane, where is everyone, on the back? on the front? and was the tank full?

was the water tank full? was the wast tank full?

your boat have trim tabs, are they fine?

Was you in a river, what was the direction off the corrent, you where going on the same side off the corrent or against it?

All this count when we talk about speed fresh water don´t have the impulse the same as sea water, boats can have very diferent speeds, but i agree with you not get on plane for 10 minutes something is very very wrong.

Did you tell to the dealer to make the anual proceed in the engine like change oil, filters etc...???

Did he change the current engine are the current engine to tight or to loose? have you change the candles engine ( don´t know if this is corect, i´m portuguese)?

Just a note i ride a 278 sc first i give full trotle so he get´s on plane, when he´s on plane i take gas, pull up a litle engine trim ( so the hull stays out off water) and play with the trims tabs normally at 25% or 30% i can go about 3100rpm on 32 mph i have a mercruiser 350Mag with a Bravo III

I´ll wait for your answers this i like to discuss

  4. I'd like to place an "in hull" tranciever for a GPS/Fishfinder on my 298 SC. (I don't want a transom mount and I really want to avoid a thru-hull)

Does anyone know of the optimum location for this --- or are there any areas I should totally avoid.

Thanks for any help you can supply.

    Hi there,

Hi have a northstar system GPS/Fishfinder see if they have what you want:

  5. I have a 2002 Monterey 282 cruiser with 5.0 efi's 240hp ea and Aplha drives, Last fall I was plannig on doing hte risers nad manifolds as preventive maintenace. Luck would have it the last eek of the season last year I ingested Water in my Starboard Engine.

    Hi there,

If repower is what you have in your mind just go for mercruiser engine if your boat ride in seawater go for 4.3 mpi seacore with Bravo III unit (please make me a favor don´t go for alpha sterndrive) or go for 5.0 mpi seacore engine or also you can install a 350 MAG seacore engine.

This 3 engines are very good for your boat. If you go for Volvo go for Ocean X engine (this is a brand new sea engine) i think monterey haven´t test it on any boat but it promise is best then seacore system(this i don´t buy it)

Or you can go for turbo diesel if this is your decision go for the new mercruiser turbo diesel´s engine with bravo XR sterndrive you will not believe what the performance off this engine is unbelived it really are very good and can run so good or better then gas engines

Please tell me what are you thinking so people here can help you out.

  6. hi Ian,

Here we are talking again, i hope you see what i talk about fresh water system i go for the mercruiser system and change the ECM the engine is perfect know i´m going to change the toilet to electrical system so many changes i did in my boat can´t stop is like sunshine never get there, always far  .

About this i make some research in the web you are right it´s not prove that it really work if so why the boats about 65 meters don´t use it ? i have another question if it work with fibregllass how can it work if you already have painted the boat with antifouling, and etc... and etc...

I´ll talk to these guys to see if they are interest in make a test in Portuguese sea waters 12 months is not the best choice for boat owners we all have $$$ invest in the maintence, cleaning etc... the price just would be good if it last about 24 months without take the boat out off water for cleanning i just put this here for us (monterey owners) start talking about this and if anyone buy it

Any way if they agree with me and let me take this to Portugal for a price that can be good enouth for test i tell you and we start to take pictures avery mounth to see how it protect the boat.

What i learn in Superior is that the frequenci that they say it works just go for a few algae not every one and how it go for fish? does it make my boat like a big antena? is my boat responsible for dolphin get lost? this is what i´m trying to learn if they just let me.

    Let´s see what they response.

  7. My remote commander has stopped working. I have looked for fuzes or loose wires on the commander and the stereo unit to no avail. The wire from the commander to the stereo unit looks to be sealed the whole way. Can anyone provide any insight on what to do next?

    Hi there,

Why don´t you take it out and go to a kenwood dealer to see it, maybe it just brouke down or maybe there is a fuse that you don´t see.

  8. I have a 2000 262 Monterey with a 5.7 Mercrusier with a Bravo III. I am in the midwest so I am in freshwater. I some times get my alarm to go off for only a short 2 to 4 secends and I'm not sure why. The water temperature at its highest is 175 degrees. Most of the time is runs slightly below 175. I am trying to decide if this is what is making the alarm go off. Maybe 175 is right on the edge of setting off the alarm. What should my temperature be? Can anyone help me?? <_<

    Hi there,

Please tell me if that´s fahreneits if so than it´s the correct temperature normally a mercruiser motor like yours or mine work at 90º the alarm can go off by many reasons (or combined with other things), in any case what you should do is to talk to a mercruiser dealer for him to check why that happens.

  9. Hi Marfi - thanks for this. I know you can purchase showers from other manufacturers for fitting and thats ok,

however I would like to know which shower unit Monterey fit to the new version of this boat as they have obviously sourced a unit that is perfect for it. Also the size and the whereabouts of the water tank to supply the shower would be of great interest as I am sure that Monterey would have considered the best placing of these parts within the boat. I would certainly get a professional to fit this type of unit.

Perhaps you guys at Monterey could let me know if you can sell the shower system? I would love to know.

    Thanks,

    J.

    Hi there,

Have you tried to talk to your monterey dealer? perhaps they can purchase that equipment directly from Monterey Boats and apply to your boat, if they can´t help you i can try to see in my boat what´s the company that makes this and you can try to see in U.K. if they got a dealer, if my memory is corect i think is a Jabsco system but i can be wrong and this is for waste and not for fresh water system .

  11. I have a 2004 298SC and the circut breaker for my Jabsco fresh water pump keeps shutting off. I cleaned the strainer and it did not seem to help. It does seem to work some times but most times you need to keep resetting the breaker. Any idea on what is causing this issue and how to fix it? Seems like it could be a faulty pump or breaker but maybe there is sometihng else I am missing. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi there,

The circuit breaker on a boat as a proposal so if this keep happens is because there is a eletric problem maybe it kould be in overheat and before something gets really wrong it just cut off.

So go to a Monterey dealer or a professional to see it and resolve it, until you do it i recomend you not to keep turning it on.

Seen to many eletric problems get a boat on the bottom off the ocean :)

  12. Hi there,

Any boat can have a shower only thing you need is a kit and a professional to do this, so after this, only you need is the most to tell you the corect parts and you see in your boat where to install it.

    Hi again,

You can start by see this website

    http://www.plastimo.com/

In there you have a section for fresh water system, all equipament pumps, tubes, etc... even if you won´t hot water, i think it´s not a DIY system, but any system like the one you wont should be installed by a professional and prefered by a Monterey dealer.

  13. I have a mercruiser 4.3 ltr fitted on my monterey 210 montura. When I am revving approx 4100 the alarm beeps and noticed the oil pressure goes down, i slow revs approx 3900 and works fine. any help please.

    Hi there,

How is the oil level? is it level or maybe it can be a litle low, i think you should call a mercruiser dealer, that´s not normal at all.

Search your local dealer in the mercruiser web site.

  14. Hi,

I own a Monterey Edge 180 that I bought new in 2000. I notice that the new version of my boat has a shower attachment on the stern. Is it possible to retro fit a shower attachment to the boat? I was wondering if Monterey sell a kit so that I could either have it fitted by a professional or even DIY.

Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on this?

    I live in the UK.

    Thanks,

    Jed.

  15. post-11421-1243519092_thumb.jpgI just bought a 248ls with the 496/B3 setup-my first Monterey and I love it. The boat runs great-once I'm on plane, but seems to struggle at hole shot. I had my two buddies riding in bow to assist take off. That size boat with that size motor shouldn't have issues-right? The props are SS 26p and came with the boat. When I returned to my slip and lifted the boat, I noticed the drive and it seemed (to me) that it could be trimmed down a few more inches-but my trim motor won't allow anymore. See attached photo, taken with my phone so may not do any justice.

I asked the Mercury tech at the marina to take a look. He flat out said to drop to a 24p prop set. My concern with that is I could over-rev the motor and lose some top end. He also mentioned a drive spacer to lower the entire outdrive. Any thoughts?

    Hi there,

Maybe this can help if i understand your question correctly, i´m portuguese and some times just have some problems with tecnic words,

Bravo III unit have 2 positions, if you look close you can ajust your sterndrive with the bottom off your boat, i know this because i´ve bought a 4.3 mpi seacore with a bracvo III unit and that spare part didn´t come ( was lots in the transport), and without it the sterndrive could not be concluded, so talk to your mercruiser dealer and see if the sterndrive is in the same line off the bottom off your boat with this foto i can´t tell that.

  16. Hi all again,

After a lot off problems ( problems result by the changes i had in my mind to this boat) finally i tested the boat on the open sea, first off all i make some changes on the boat, i take out the front stairs and change to a electric winch, it´s cover by the stairs cover so the only thing you see is the anchor the rest is cover, change the cooler system and put the mercruiser fresh water system that make me change the ECM, i instaled the northstar complete system to smartcraft so i have all engine information on my GPS like consuming curves and how much gasoline it take in diferent rpm (if you wont to do this don´t forget to buy a juntion box for smartcraft and a gasoline smartcraft sensor), and the radio conect to the gps, instaled a land conection, and batery charge and converser, a radar defletor, make some upgrades to the way monterey ends a boat ( some selant on some places on the boat and a electric cover for the wires that was in the cabin and to the engine compartment so the wires was not in contact with any thing), and i instaled in the swimplataform the nautley system for my dynhgi so i can launch to water so easy and take him anywhere. This i thanks to mercruiser dealer in Albufeira he make my dreams get real and make all changes in my boat.

The sea this weekend wasn´t the best for a test the wind was 28-35 km/h and the sea with 1 meter in a interval off waves by 3 to 5 seconds, so it was a day for jumping in waves, not the best i like so i have took a 25 min ride going in the same direction off the waves, wich make me see that the boat ride very nice some waves came on my right side just a litle trim tab and the front was horizontal, very nice, the speed i choose was 32 - 35 mph (if i see corectly i make some confusion with knots) when i turned to the marina i had the waves on front and by my left side as well, well...... that´s when i get the idea to check out how the boat perform with the engine so i give and take gas as the waves come yes it jump from one wave to another even i heard the engine working outside the water it was really nice, it dind´t get to one side or another it just go strait to another wave, so i make another test go with less gas and try to see how make the boat not jump and still going on plane, when then that´s when i get the really idea i bought the boat i have in mind, it was wonderfull go up go down but it dosen´t jump just a smooth up and down, i love the 278sc, i will make more rides to see what it can do how it turns on full gas and make some S to see how he andles, by the way, the dinghy was on the swimplatform and he didn´t move an inch congratulations to nautley their solution for my boat was wonderful

I will have to know how to use the trim tabs with the engine trim, my last boat didn´t have the trim tabs i´m still learning that, on the marina get the boat to my place was easy, but too all in monterey i take my hat out nice work on this boat keep the good work we´ll keep on buying them.

  17. I have a 5.7 Bravo 3 and the alarm goes off when I am backing down from a higher speed like 30 -35 mph, if I back down slowly it doesn't go off. It goes off for 2 to 4 second then quits. The oil presure is around 40+ and the temp is around 175. The lower unit oil is also full. What else makes this alarm go off? Any ideas? Help!

I am in fresh water so I don't have a closed water system.

    Hi there,

The best person to respond to you is a local dealer mercruiser, but i have an idea do you have any vegetebles in the sterndrive or near the propeller?, or it can be an info that the engine recives in a moment that indicate a problem and then the problem is off and the alarm gets quiet, but any way that´s not normal in a mercruiser, i recomend a mercruiser dealer to take a look at that, please info us what was the problem so we can know if that happen to any one off us.

  18. Hi,

Just put my 278sc 2 days ago on the sea for the first time, just to tell you that the boat have a pomp on the bottom if the water stop comming from the sterndrive it will come from the bottom off the boat, so if it gets vegetables or a plastic, it won´t warm up, i it have a fresh water cooling system, with a new ECM.

  19. I have a Monterey cuddy cabin 210CU fitted with mercruiser 4.3ltr V6 , Alpha one drive and would like to install a stainless steel prop. Any suggestions and help please. Thanks

    Hi,

Just take your out and go to a mercury dealer to buy one new in stainless steel, you can also by Quicksilver propoller stainless steel, don´t forget the propoller have to be equal to the one you have right now.

If you don´t know how to take your out, take your boat to a Mercruiser dealer to take it off and put the new one.

    Enjoy your riding,

  20. Boating in lakes here in Central/Northern California I think I'm the only Monterey Boat I know of amongst all the other Bayliners, Master Crafts, Centurions, etc. I like my individuality. In fact, our family pulled ashore to a beach and had a guy say "Monterey, never heard of that boat before". I love it.

    Hi i´m from Portugal,

But i can say this, if he told you that, in fact he don´t understand anything about boats or what´s the best choice in boats for him, in Europe we say that Monterey is the American Sunseeker and we take the boats to the limits :P

P.S. - Lots off boat builders try to create and copy what Monterey already use, they are always a step behind.
