  1. Hi All -

I recently took delivery of a 2008 180FS that, of course, needed some adjustments and tweeking. One of the issues that I am a bit at odds with the dealer on is the trim gauge reading. Initially, the gauge red full down when the drive was full in/down and just 1/4 of the scale when trimmed full out/up (NOT trailer position, just trim).

I complained that this was not correct and they adjusted the sending unit <_< - now it reads 1/4 scale when full in/down and 1/2 scale when full out/up; basically they just moved the initial position of the needle. They insist this is correct operation.

I know these gauges are relative indicators but am I wrong? Shouldn't the needle move more than 1/4 of the scale between full down and full up? I don't seem to remember the gauge on my previous 2 boats (both Mercruiser powerd as is the Monterey).

    TIA

    David

    Hi David,

First off all what´s your engine type? is a mpi mercury? what kind off gauges do you have are they smartcraft?, the gauge off the power trim goes from UP to Down don´t have only 2 positions, something is wrong if i where you i enter the mercury site and live that question to them, or juast give a call to mercury distribuiter.

  2. I have a 2005 214FS and I am looking for the proper starting technique for my carburated 5.7 Mercruiser. I have tried many different methods with different throttle positions but nothing seems to work. What usually works is letting it turn over until it beeps, as soon as it beeps it starts right up. It seems to me that this extended cranking would be bad for the starter? I can't find any help in the manual, Can anyone explain the beep, and the immediate start up after the beep? Thanks for any help, mike

    Hi,

Are you talking about a beep when you turn the key to on? i had a yamaha 5.7 all i need to do is open the air ( if you do not know how you open the air ask to a mercury dealer) give it a few seconds to pull gasoline into the carburated and then turn the key.

I don´t think this helps but in a mpi Mercury engine you turn the key to on and a beep cames along after the beep just turn the key on, but those type off engines are not carburated are injection.

Try out the Mercury site they are your best choice.

  3. Hi Sophie,

Sorry, I don't have a 290 but I can tell you about issues I had with my 330, Weaver davits and the Weaver "snap togglers"

I originally had the Weaver "Z" shaped davits that dropped the level of davit to just above the waterline. (I think Weaver call them "Offset Davit Heads). These should have never been fitted to my boat in the first place - but that is a whole different story)

Problem is that on the 330 whenever you come of the plane, a large "standing wave" comes along underneath the boat and swamps the swim platform. It doesn't matter how quickly or slowly you come off the plane, the "wave" is always there.

If the "side inflatable roll" of the dinghy is too low (too close to level of the swim platform), this wave pushes the dinghy up and will want to rip the davit out.

It actually tends to strip the thread of the "toggle nut" and the mounting plate of the davit can become bent. It didn't cause any damage to the swim platform so I guess it demonstrates how stong just the one layer of the swim platform is (at least on a 330)

Solution was to "reverse" the "Z" davit so that the inflatable roll is well above the level of the swim platform and unaffected by the "wave"

You should check your 290 to see if this "wave" will affect your dinghy and place the height accordingly.

    Hi Ian,

Give me just an opinion are you talking about this ( i think is on attach ), because this is what i´m thinking about and is above the water line in fact is above the swimplatform

  4. I have a 2008 290 with an integrated swim platform and need to install davits for an inflatable. Not sure what the core material layers are within the integrated swim paltform. When adding davits i.e. Weaver, is it necessary to use a long bolt from the top of the swim platform through to the underside (8 inches or so). Or, can you use the Weaver Industries Snap Toggler which is, for the most part, a butterfly screw which only penetrates the top of the swim platform?

    Hi there,

it´s funny i just put the link for that, i´m going to buy the davits i just have to make the formula he puts on the site, i have a 278sc new one, take a look to this:

Example: If your dinghy width is 60", then divide by 2 + 4" = 34". If your swim platform is 32", by adding 2" to the platform this would make it equal to the dinghy width of 34" so then you would have chosen the 6" model.

Hint: it's the 6 inch model you need because 4 inches of the mount must be used to secure to the deck.

I´m with the same problem also

  5. I need to replace the propeller on my Monterey 220 Explorer but after looking into it I realize there are so many available options. Can some one please give me some suggestions on what would be an idea type of propeller for my boat?

    thanks

    HI there,

I´m from Portugal i don´t know how you work, but here the best thing you can do is to ask for a propeller for your engine, take the old one out and buy a new one in Mercury if your engine is a mercury or just take the old one to anyone who knows what to do, perhaps a mecanic, if you won´t to change the propeller for more speed give a second and just don´t do it because changing something that Monterey have been tested with the factory for your engine is a badly choice, you don´t have the Know How to make the same test they do to see if your boat really is more fast and haveing the best top rpm, don´t forget you don´t go out only strait, go to the represented off your engine just give the old one and ask for a new one exactly as the old one, here´s a tip if you go for other look for Quicksilver propeller.

  6. My husband and I just bought a 320SY and we can't wait to get her, we actually asked the marina that we will be keeping her at to allow us to bring her in a bit early since this is our first boat, and we wanted to get the feel for docking and such, so we don't look ridicules when everyone else starts getting into the marina. We have 3 weeks till drop as of yesterday. Her name is After Hours. From the little experience that we do have with dealers, I have to say that the dealer that we purchased her from I would recommend without hesitation.

Hi, welcome a board, yes it´s a beautiful boat, i have seen him here in Portugal in Nauticampo 2009, we have a 278sc, that i hope this weekend goes to the water, the best thing i saw in your boat is the design, i think you´ll enjoy him when getting some good waves.

  9. I welcome a board a have a 278sc and i recomend the norhtstar system ( old Navman), you can have the engine information ( with a cable for mpi system, the carburant system) with your radio reciving and sending from the GPS, also you have a quickly sos sending your position when conected the radio to the GPS.

Navman and Northstar have the equipment with a Smartcraft software already instaled, that´s what you have 350 Mag.

    Try to see this link:

    http://www.northstarnav.com/en/Products/

I have bought a 4.3 mpi seacore engine with a bravo III for my 200cc celebrity and i have a GPS instaled to the radio, i Have all engine information on the smartcraft in the GPS

    Best Regards

    Hope usuful information

  10.

    Hi,

i already contact the factory, here in Europe Mercury is represented by Touron, i already have the price you are talking about, is 2500 € ( almost 3500 US $), and the boat will be all year in salt water, i have a celebrity boat 220cc and i bought in August a Mercury 4.3mpi seacore with a BravoIII unit, and i love the engine, that boat is on the water as we speak, and i don´t have any problem on the engina ( a litle lie, the analogic smartcraft don´t work, but i do know that´s because i have to reprogram the engine also the Navman Chartplotter for Smartcraft engines don´t work as well), so the basic problem is i need a solution to clean my engine, and you help me a lot because i didn´t want only one opinion( by Turon) Thanks
