  1. I currently have Standard Mercruiser controls on a 2004 298SS, I'm looking at a new boat, 2007 298SS same size but this boat has gaffrig controls.

Does anyone have experience with both? It looks more difficult to dock and work in forward and reverse. the throttle look like they get in the way of the forward/reverse.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jim

  2. Thank you for the reply.

The speed was from a GPS, I had a survey done on the boat when I purchased it recently, he had diagnostic software hooked up to the engines, at full throttle the tachs indicated 4,400 RPMs and the software showed 4,400 on one motor and 4,410 on the other.

I guess I have to find a tech to try and figure the prop situation out.

What stock props would come from the factory when the boat was purchased new in my area (Long Island, NY)?

    Thanks

    Jim

  3. Hi Jim,

Not neccesarily. Prop selection is also based on the gear ratio of your outdrive, what you use your boat for and the alitude that you boat in. It would be a good idea to get the advice of a certified Mercruiser tech and also make sure the tach's are synchronized. Also confirm that you are getting a true mph reading on a GPS for your speed in case it is a gauge issue.

There is a prop selector on the Mercury website as well: www.mercurymarine.com

  4. With the bimini top up, just me in the boat, 1/2 tank of fuel, some wind swirling...I got 54.5 mph on GPS. I have the 2005 with Twin 350 Mags. Tach's indicated just over 5000 RPM.

I would imagine with the bimini top off and some tweeking on the trim, no wind, etc. 57-58 would be possible. It will run 52 VERY strong without pinning it! Getting that extra 5 mph takes a lot of effort. As I said above, I haven't had the boat over 40 most of the summer! It was fun to go out and open it up on some "normal" water.

    Thanks Sunrise!

Do you know what props you have on the boat?

  5. As stated in the title, I have a 2004 298 SS with a pair of 300hp Mercruiser 350 Mag MPI Horizon's. Every review I read has the boat at mid 50's to low 60's. My friend has a 2007 with a pair of 320 hp mercruiser, I was on that boat with 9 people doing over 60 mph.

Boating magazine hit 57.8 mph with 280 hp volvo's. http://www.boatingmag.com/monterey-298-shock-therapy

I have Bravo 3 drives and stainless steel 24P props.

At WOT and trimmed, it's at 4,400 rpm's.

The top speed is 46 MPH on GPS.

Why would I be off over 10 mph with 40 more horsepower.

    Thank you for your help.

    Jim

  6. I just bought a 2007 298 ssx and am having trouble finding a mooring cover without having to have one custom made. Any suggestions as to where I might look?

I noticed you have a 298, I'm having a problem with the top end speed of mine. Do you know your speed at WOT on GPS?

I think they came with Taylor Made canvas. Maybe contact a dealer and/or taylor made to see if they can give you some measurements of snap locations to determine if it will work.

    Good luck.

  8. Hello all, I was hoping to get some help with the performance issues I am having with my 245CR. I bought the boat with 34.5 hours on it, and since I have owned it the boat has had some performance issues getting up on plane. I have done fuel filters, spark plugs, etc.... The engine sounds very healthy not missing at all. I have had it where there has been 5 people in the boat with me and I could not get on plane. There have been a couple of other times just pulling the kids on the tube when I could not get up on plane. My engine is the upgraded Volvo GXi 320hp, so I figure with this small of a boat it should pop up on the water and really scoot. I can only get 4400rpm and around 38mph out of her. I am running F5 props which might be a little on the tall side but according to the charts I should still be able to get 4800RPM. And I would understand if my boat came out of the hole slow but had top end, however it seems that I don't have either really... I am not really sure where to start looking. Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

My brother had a similar issue with his Grady White (barely got up on a plane and no top end), His mechanic changed the props and it's like a brand new boat. I don't know the props he started with or ended up with.

    Good luck,

    Jim

  9. Jim, I have a 2005 with 350 Mag's. I get mid-upper 50's on the boat speedo...never GPS'd it. We have the bimini top in place 99% of the time and it gets a little flappy at that speed. That's really moving in that boat. I'm not sure I would want to go much faster. We run Lake of the Ozarks, so on weekends it's 25-30 max with trim tabs set at 30%...crazy rough.

Mid to upper 50's would be great! Do you have any way of checking the MPH on GPS?

  10. This season I began having some issues with my tachometer in my 2005 Monterey 268SC and am looking for a replacement. The tach has a black face with an hour meter and a chrome or silver ring around it. "faria" is written in red any idea how I can find the part number from faria so I can place an order for this piece.

    I need this info too!

    Thanks.

  11. If the area is directly under the mount, not visible after repair, you could to fill the hole with Bondo fiberglass filler. It's already mixed up and has glass strands in it. Just mix a little hardener and fill the holes, then re-drill. I haven't looked at mine to see...do they use a screw or rivet? I got a nasty gouge in the gel coat this last weekend. I will be filling AND gel coating at some point! Sucks.

It's a screw. As a temporary solution, I put in a small piece of a plastic molly and tightened the screw. It held pretty well for now.
